He was previously awarded the DCM (Distinquished Conduct Medal), recorded in the London Gazette 17th December 1914.
The Citation reads: Seajeant Major A Cox, 122nd Battery, Royal Field Artillery....For exceptionally good service, and gallantry in bringing away wounded at Le Cateau on 26th August 1914.
The DCM was regarded as one step down from a Victoria Cross
